We rebuilt the autumn grid this week. Not a rebrand. Not a manifesto. A practical reset so the calendar makes sense and stops punishing the people it should be serving.
The city's arts calendar is dense: Melbourne Art Fair (19–22 Feb), NotFair at Prahran (14–23 Feb), Craft Victoria's Fresh! running through March. We're not fighting it. We're aligning. Herding cats is the wrong metaphor — we're not herding anything. We're making space for things that already want to happen.
What's Changing
-
Fewer overlapping weeknight starts. Two good things on the same Tuesday is a scheduling failure, not a scene flex. We've been doing this. We're stopping.
-
More early sessions. Some of us have morning jobs. Some of us have people to get home to. The old grid treated stamina as a prerequisite for access. That's not programming — that's gatekeeping with a sound system.
-
Clearer low-volume labelling. Walk-in culture means people get surprised. Surprises are sometimes good. Surprises at a quiet listening event are not good. We're labelling clearly now.
-
One open Thursday slot. The wildcard. The chaos slot. One open-format night a week where we find out what happens. You know the one.
Why This Actually Matters
The old grid had an unspoken entrance requirement: be available late, indefinitely, on a weeknight. If you worked mornings, cared for someone, or wanted to catch the last tram, you were seeing about twenty percent of what we built.
That's not a programming philosophy. That's an accident that became a norm and then became invisible. We noticed it. We're fixing it.
Quick FAQ
Is this permanent?
No. Monthly review. Keep what works, cut what doesn't. Iteration over ideology.
Are weekend blocks still chaotic?
Intentionally. Chaotic-by-design and chaotic-by-accident are different things. We're in the first category now.
Can I pitch a format?
Yes. One page. Clear run-sheet. We read everything. We reply when we can.
Less friction. Better nights. More people in the room. If that sounds naïve, fine — it's naïve with a spreadsheet and a door time. We'll see how it goes.
