FEMINISM WITH A WINK AND A BLEEP: Nicole Skeltys in Conversation
Analog defiance and dancefloor cheek.
As one half of pioneering electro-femme duo B(if)tek, solo “hillbilly house” act Artificial, and a researcher and composer, Australian musician and electronic music producer Nicole Skeltys has long explored the futurist ideals of electronic music and their link to modern feminist creative practice.
Her raw and lysergic analogue electronic experiments with Kate Crawford as B(if)tek — navigating the largely male-dominated electronic music landscape of the late 90s — were extended in a more freeform direction through her solo project, Artificial, which delved into the world of “fizzy lo-fi electro-lounge music.” Since those seminal days of heady electronica, she has composed and recorded a rock opera titled Canary Wharf about the financial industry under late capitalism, earned a Doctorate in Creative Arts from La Trobe University, and continued to experiment with sound and its relation to contemporary culture. Thirty years on, the cheek and ingenuity present in her pivotal B(if)tek and Artificial creations remain as vibrant and exploratory as ever.
Join us as Nicole discusses her ever-curious artistry with Prudence Rees-Lee and the community in our MESS in Conversation series.
The MESS in Conversation series is supported by the City of Melbourne Multiyear Arts Grants.
